Although there are elements of Romanticism in all music, the music written around the 19th century expressed a new passion and drama. Imagination and emotion were considered more important than formal structure and many traditional musical forms were being transformed into something new and more exciting. Composers began to be more influenced by nationalism, the beauty of nature and the supernatural. For the piano this was also the age of virtuosity.
